AHRQ Research and Resources: Confirming Patients Understand their Healthcare Instructions

Tuesday, July 16, 2019

The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) reports that fewer than one-third (30 percent) of adults reported they were always asked to describe healthcare instructions in their own words after providers gave them information about their healthcare. This is an important step in the “teach back” method of patient education, which is an evidence-based technique providers can use to confirm patients understand their instructions.
